Unique Group, global leaders in subsea technologies and engineering, has launched its new in-house calibration laboratory at the Aberdeen office, significantly expanding the company’s survey equipment support capabilities and strengthening service delivery for clients across the offshore and subsea markets.
Expanded Calibration Capabilities and Supported Equipment
The new facility enables the calibration of a wide range of oceanographic survey equipment, reducing reliance on third-party providers and dramatically improving turnaround times.
The lab is equipped to calibrate oceanographic equipment from leading manufacturers including Valeport, Tritech, Paroscientific and Sonardyne. Supported equipment includes but is not limited to: sound velocity sensors (e.g. Valeport SVX2), bathymetric sensors, CTD depth (Conductivity Temperature Depth) sensors, pressure sensors, Sonardyne endcaps and Paroscientific depth sensors.
Facility Standards and Compliance
The facility features multiple insulated calibration tanks, maintained at controlled temperatures and salinities in line with manufacturer requirements. All measurements are performed using equipment traceable to UKAS standards, ensuring confidence in accuracy and repeatability.
The calibration processes are carried out in strict accordance with each manufacturer’s specified accuracy requirements, with procedures validated against approved manufacturer methodologies.
Reduced Turnaround Times and Operational Impact
Previously, calibration capabilities were limited to pressure-only testing, with most equipment requiring return to manufacturers for full calibration often resulting in turnaround times of 6–8 weeks. With the new Aberdeen lab now operational, calibration turnaround times have been reduced to under five days, significantly improving equipment availability and project readiness.
Leadership Statement
“By bringing advanced calibration capabilities in-house, we’re removing a major bottleneck for both our rental fleet and our clients.
Faster turnaround means equipment is back in use sooner, projects stay on schedule and clients have greater confidence in the reliability of their survey systems.”
