About Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment

Traditionally used to treat divers for decompression sickness, hyperbaric chambers are increasingly being used in mainstream medical services to treat conditions ranging from carbon monoxide poisoning to crush injuries and non-healing wounds.

Hyperbaric medicine, also known as hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), is the medical use of oxygen at a level higher than atmospheric pressure.

The Medical Indications for which the treatment is recognised (as indicated by the Undersea & Hyperbaric Medical Society) are:

  • Air or gas embolism
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning
  • Clostridal Myositis and Myonecrosis (gas gangrene)
  • Crush injury, compartment syndrome and other acute traumatic ischemias
  • Decompression sickness
  • Arterial insufficiencies
  • Severe anemia (blood loss)
  • Intracranial abscess
  • Necrotizing soft tissue infections (Necrotizing Fasciitis)
  • Osteomyelitis (refractory)
  • Delayed radiation injury (soft tissue and bony necrosis)
  • Compromised skin grafts and flaps
  • Acute thermal burn injury
  • Idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss
