140t Proof load test successful on passenger walkway

< 1

Summary of the Project

Unique Group’s Buoyancy & Ballast division successfully completed a 140t proof load test using water bags on the passenger boarding walkway of the Mayflower Cruise Terminal.

Client Requirement

Our client, Mayflower Cruise Terminal, approached Unique Group to perform proof load testing on the passenger boarding walkway prior to taking it into service.

Unique Solution Delivered

Based on our evaluation and discussion with the client, we decided to use a load of 140tonnes to test the entire structure. We used a combination of Unique Group’s Water Weights brand bags to achieve this load.

During the execution of the test, the brow of the walkway dropped during the loading as a result of which we had to halt the test. In order to continue with the test, Unique Group’s commissioning engineers adjusted the hydraulic rams to raise the brow to the original position.

This incident highlights one of the main advantages of using our water bags for load test rather than solid weights, as the load is applied gradually hence the test can be stopped immediately at any time. The project was completed within a day to the satisfaction of the client.
